hello!!
Well, things in this country seem to be speeding up quite a bit these days. The army recaptured the East sometime ago, but have still been trying to get the North part of the country, this is where the war is concentrated at the moment. The army now has captured pinpoint towns and have recaptured the road that leads right to the north. People couldn't access the north by road routes. they still can't but now the army can. The pastor is going up North in a week by plane, but they have to go through so many checks, it's restricted, expensive, but the only way to go up there. Due to the elections that are coming up, the president is not about to stop the advances and capturing of the 'Tamil territory', if he stops looking like he is doing something then he has less of chance of being re-elected. My version is a very simplified version, sorry, I am still trying to get to grips with the situation, but it's rather complicated!!
But anyway, today the driver came and knocked on my door and told me to come down, and who should be at the door but 4 well armed soldiers!!! The driver doesn't speak English so I was slightly surprised also a little embarrassed as I was in shorts and a t-shirt and they seemed very intrigued at the English girl and her passport! But the chief guy was nice and talked a little to me in English! I couldn't help but notice the soldiers, one of the was really young, like a teenager, maybe 17 or something. They were checking who was in the house, if we are hiding any Tamil fighters....! A lot of soldiers deserted the army, the government doesn't know what to do with them, whether to put them in prison or to send them back in. But the mood here is a little tense in a way, because of all the Tamil deaths in the North, even if the army captures every town, well that doesn't mean that there will peace! On the news this evening they were saying that there was a loud bang in Mount Lavinia, just on the outskirts of Colombo, they don't know what it was and were checking it out, but there is an unrest, and there are a lot more soldiers patrolling the streets, and stopping cars and stuff...
the maid here has gone home and so I am in charge of feeding the driver, this means waking up super early to prepare the curry and the lunch before I go to the Special Needs school!! Rani, she quickly taught me how to make curries so that the driver can eat, but today he helped me, even though we didn't speak one word to each other, it was quite fun!! But, I really had to bless the food and ask god to protect me, because he didn't totally defrost the chicken before putting it in to cook, it was only defrosted about a quarter!! And I was watching but didn't know how to say anything and so had to leave it, but I sure remembered to pray over it!!
But here kitchen hygiene is completely different as well....but it's ok, because I haven't been sick from any of the food that I have eaten and so that is really great!! I think that even though the curries are super hot, that is the reason why I don't catch any bugs, because the chilies kill them all. The food is so hot, nothing can live in it!!
be inspired....
